EYES & EARS – readings, podcasts, and other good stuff
This Sunday, some of us will slide into summer. Here in Panama, we basically have two seasons: less rain and more rain. But starting next week, I will be joining my four-season friends up North. My kid just graduated preschool and my dad is about to get married in California, so my family is going to spend some time in Sacramento, my home, sweet Central Valley home. Hotter and sunnier, but a bit less sweltering, than Panama.
All these transitions—grades, seasons, weddings, countries—has put me in a mood to share some links on democratic transitions. A bunch of podcasts I enjoy have had recent episodes on backsliding and resilience, so I had been thinking of putting something together on this topic for the newsletter. But a few paragraphs in Michelle Goldberg’s recent piece on Jon Ossoff sealed the deal.
Ossoff’s recent speeches, which he says he writes himself, have two parts. First, he dissects the rot in America’s governing institutions, a rot that, he always notes, predates Trump and helped give rise to him. Then he lays out a liberal, pluralist version of American identity to challenge the Trump administration’s white nationalism.
“We’re bound together by the same great national spirit that passed civil rights laws, defeated fascism and landed men on the moon,” Ossoff said in his kickoff speech. A bit later, he added, “This is what small men like Donald Trump and JD Vance and Stephen Miller will never understand. That our national greatness flows not through our blood or our genes, but through our ideas.”
Movements that have defeated authoritarianism, most recently in Hungary, usually use precisely this formula: a sweeping denunciation of corruption with a reclamation of national mythology. “Across decades and continents, corruption has been the fatal weakness of authoritarian regimes,” the Stanford political scientist Adam Bonica wrote in an essay last year.
[...]
When he talks about Trump’s shameless looting, he radiates righteous indignation, like a millennial Atticus Finch. I was in Hungary in April when Peter Magyar dislodged the strongman Viktor Orban with a deeply patriotic campaign centered on the regime’s gargantuan corruption. Ossoff’s indictment of Trump’s “Mar-a-Lago mafia” echoes Magyar’s condemnation of Viktor Orban’s “mafia state.”
More than any other politician in America, Bonica told me, Ossoff is following the playbook that’s worked against autocrats in other countries. Whether or not he runs for president, the party can learn something from his approach.

Youtube keeps trying to push Ossoff videos on me these days, and I think I will have to start watching a few more. As longtime readers of the blog know, given my constant coverage of Mayor Mamdani, I love a politician who can spin a good yarn about a positive vision of government power. But I am thinking I need to spend a little more time looking for politicians who can clearly diagnose and identify a path out of backsliding. A couple more links on this theme that have caught my eye (or ear) these days include:
[LISTEN / READ] “Dan Slater Says Authoritarian Ideologies Still Matter,” Democracy Paradox, 10 June 2026. This is one of my go-to podcasts these days, host Justin Kempf always brings a thoughtful conversation (and even provides a useful transcript). I especially enjoyed this from Slater around the 19 minute mark, touching on different visions of government power:
…I do think that fascism and communism — the earliest waves of right-wing and left-wing authoritarianism — were very, very ideological. The Cold War battle between communism and anti-communism was also very, very ideological. So what’s happening now is not that it’s non-ideological, it just takes a little more work to understand.
So if we put this in terms of political psychology: to me, the most fundamental difference between a right-wing and a left-wing orientation is what I would call a threat orientation versus a gains orientation. On the political left, the basic idea is that there are inequalities, injustices, and hierarchies in the world that are unjust — they’re there for accidental reasons, they’re not deserved, and therefore the role of government should be to level these hierarchies and make sure that those who have been marginalized can make real gains. But on the political right, the more basic idea is a threat orientation — that hierarchies are basically fair, they’re earned, and the main problem is when people try to threaten these natural just hierarchies through pursuing social justice or diversification. And from there you can start to see how different varieties of this arise in different contexts. Things like communism, anti-communism, and fascism are just particular instances of those orientations toward politics.
I am sure if you read this blog you can guess which orientation I am rooting for, even as I hope to keep this space welcoming for all. Also check out:

[LISTEN] “The Authoritarian Playbook: Yelena V. Litvinov & Tatyana Margolin,” Future Hindsight podcast, 26 March 2026. This is another of my other favorite politics and governance podcasts these days. The guests “Yelena and Tatyana are co-founders of Stroika — an organization connecting and resourcing frontline anti-authoritarian movements worldwide.” Their conversation with host Mila Atmos ends on a hopeful note, about how a period of backsliding actually opens up avenues for progress going forward if we can meet the moment. I plan to pick up on some of those themes next week. Big swings.

Finally, one of my favorite weekly palate cleansers in Sunday’s “Two Thoughts” note from The OSVerse Substack, a weekly compendium of paired quotes from O’Shaughnessy Ventures. This week had a couple thematically appropriate quotes worth sharing from the great Jorge Luis Borges:
“Dictatorships foster oppression, dictatorships foster servitude, dictatorships foster cruelty; more abominable is the fact that they foster idiocy.”
“Only in the present do things happen.”
In my present, Panama just kicked off its first match in the World Cup. And my wife’s home country, Colombia, is playing later. So I will have to leave this note here and get back to fighting authoritarianism tomorrow.
